Last week I wrote about the similarities between Chris Evans’s Captain America and his four colour counter-part. Prior to that, you had my review of the 90s Cap flick. This is another one about the guy with the shield and I think this one is going to be my last.
Today saw the release of latest issue of Captain America. Issue#616 marks the 70th anniversary of the super soldier. It’s probably in my view; it’s got one of the best covers of all time. It’s been done by artist Travis Charest who also contributes a page inside the double sized comic.
It’s an all star jam packed issue which has top artists like Mike Deotato, Howard Chaykin, Ed Mc Guinness and Brit artist, Paul Grist illustrating the star spangled avenger at various points in his life. What’s happening in current issues is Cap’s former partner Bucky has taken over the mantle of Captain America whilst Steve Rogers has become the head of the national security. But at some point this year, Rogers will reclaim the title soon....
I remember when I bought an issue which was the 50th anniversary issue. The main story had Cap meeting American folk legends Paul Bunyan and Uncle Sam whilst hunting down a villain called Father Time.
It turns out it’s just a scheme cooked up by his teammates, the Avengers who want to celebrate his “fifty years” being alive. The charm about anniversary issues, is the main writer h/she creates a storyline which serves as a jumping on point for new readers or either write a tale, a standalone where it encapsulates the character back story or just finish off a plotline which has been going for a while. It’s also filled with back up stories featuring supporting players done by different writing and art teams.
These types of issues are great reads and if I like look of these types of comics, I just get them due to the fact they are double sized.
Happy Birthday Cap! You don’t look a day over seventy!
