The big green guy

San Diego Comic Con is on right now, I really wish I was there. It costs a bomb to get there and it’s always been one of the places I’ve wanted to go to. As always top comic publishers like Marvel have a big presence there, with panels ranging from comics, toys, films and console games but the big talking point for fans is the upcoming Avengers film.

Whilst at a panel for Dark Horse Comics, Avengers director Joss Whedon is remaining tight lipped about next year’s big summer blockbuster. Although he commented that “the cast of Avengers are a better team than the characters they portray.” Attendees at the con have been treated to production art of the team by concept artist Ryan Meinerding, who’s done illustrations for films like Iron Man, Thor and Transformers.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the coverage at the convention and on a daily basis at the event; Marvel have been releasing painted posters of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor to Nick Fury played by Samuel L Jackson.  The images released, all are connected to form one giant poster. It reminds me of a time when film posters were painted, now most of them are just photo shopped to death.  Marvel has released the last poster which is the not so jolly green giant, the Incredible Hulk with new Bruce Banner, Mark Ruffalo. The Shutter Island actor is also doing motion capture for his pixelated counterpart. The actor spoke on MTV about playing the Hulk “All the features are mine, just really big. I got to see the maquette of the Hulk yesterday in full scope, and it’s awesome.”

Judging by Meinerding’s painting, Hulk not only looks like an exaggerated version of Ruffalo but also reminiscent of the earlier days of the character when he was drawn by artist Jack Kirby. Hmmm I’ll probably buy this at a convention soon...
