(looks like the red eye removal didn't go well)
I’ve recently upped my hatred of zombies by playing Dead Island and now my hatred of the undead continues unabated by watching the Walking Dead.
Although I’ve got the first soft cover of Robert Kirkman’s undead saga, I’ve read a few issues here and there, It’s a well known fact that a lot of comic and even non comic readers are picking up the comics either in graphic novels or as single issues. In fact today I was asked why aren’t you reading The Walking Dead? Well I read quite a lot of comics but getting the large TWD compendium has been always been on my to-get list.
With the T.V show it picks up where it left off, with Grimes(Andrew Lincoln) leading a band of survivors to Fort Benning, but after ending up on an interstate full of cars, they decide to loot what’s left in the vehicles but soon a herd of zombies appear which leads to Sophia running off into the woods. Her disappearance reveals cracks in the group with various factions starting to emerge.
Although it’s been rumoured that the series has a reduced budget, no expense was spared with the first episode of the second series. The shows probably got the best looking or should that be the ugliest zombies? Along with top notch acting from the likes of Lincoln and Laurie Holden as Andrea, the feature length opener kept me on the edge of my seat especially when the group are forced to hide from the staggering corpses by ducking underneath a bunch of cars. It’s also good when the gore count goes up in particular when Dixon (Norman Reedus) does an impromptu zombie autopsy.
Whilst the series was in pre production, show runner Frank Darabont was given the heave-ho after having arguments with the show’s executive producers over the budget, Darabont has written this episode under a pseudonym, perhaps we’ll see the effects of his departure in later episodes but will his presence be missed? Hopefully creator Kirkman and co will keep the quality and gore factor established by him.
But I’ll leave the last word to a friend of mine who recently saw it as well “An actually scary and gut wrenching way to kick off the second season.”
I couldn’t have said it better myself Mr Higgins....
