We're Jammin

A lot of the comic press and social networking sites last week picked up on the story of artist Marc Silvestri who is hospitalised with an ankle injury, but he’s on the mend and during this period, I’m thinking that he must have had problems with the leg which led to contributions from other artists for Incredible Hulk#2.

A total of 11 artists some of them like (upcoming Hulk artist) Whilce Portacio worked at Silvestri’s art studio Top Cow helped him out at his hour of need. From the previous issue which I slated and then a friend criticised me for doing so and the artwork has made a massive improvement. The first few pages remind me of the days when Silvestri was drawing X Men, especially the female characters.

(I didn't get the standard issue instead I bought the expensive variant. Former Hulk artist Mike Deodato takes his inspiration from a classic Iron Man cover.)

Aaron opens up the issue on Bruce Banner’s side of the story with an estranged wife leaving him again and a low case of self esteem, his experiments leave him with a “tumour the size of grapefruit.” The nutty professor believes a “piece” of him has been stolen and is willing to do anything do get it back, even creating another gamma bomb. In the meantime, the Hulk has to contend with Hulked out sharks which were created by Banner.

The main feat of this issue is the jam, it looks seamless. Most of these collaborative efforts just fall flat on their face. I read Batman: The Return Of Bruce Wayne last year, all of which had different artists working on each issue. Although the story was quite good, artwise there wasn’t any consistency with it. I like to see an artist stick on a book and make it their own.
